4)      Selected articles from the from the HCT library databases

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:   By the end of this course you will be able to:
·         CLO 1- Undertake an introductory survey of the history and culture of ancient and Arab civilizations of the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf  from ca. 3300 BCE to 600 CE
·         CLO 2- Compare the rise of Islamic civilization with the formation of later empires from 622 - 1922 CE
·         CLO 3- Analyze the modern history of the Gulf and the UAE in the Middle East and world economy from the 16th century to the beginning of the 21st century
·         CLO 4- Develop research skills in modern Gulf history and its relation to Arab and world history through the use of local libraries, museums, archives and online databases and resources 
·         CLO 5- Compose written papers and multimedia presentations with proper citations and use of sources

Weekly Coursework –Each week students finish or complete a discussion or project in the BB9, a documentary or reading, or practice quiz. 20 marks each week for a total of 100 marks = 10% of total grade.

Week 1
History of the Gulf – Rise of Islam and Major Arab and Muslim Dynasties and Empires;  Spread of  Islamic and Afro-asiatic economy and societies and rise of the Indian Ocean System;   Reading from Ibn Sina’s Memoirs;  Reading from Ibn Khaldun
Weekly Coursework for 20 Marks:  Write a 1-2 paragraph  review (100-150 words) of the documentary When the Moors Ruled Europe  or Oleg Grabar’s Tour of the Dome of the Rock and the Masjid al-Aqsa

Week 2
Gulf Society 14th to 16th centuries (1300 – 1500);  Indian Ocean Trade
Ibn Battuta in the Gulf; Readings from Ibn Majid’s text on the Indian Ocean and Arabian Seas;  Reading from Khaldoun al-Naqeeb

Week 2-3
The Portuguese Empire, Dutch Empire, Persian Empire and British Empire rivalry in the Gulf (1500-1750);  Excerpts from Khaldoun al-Naqeeb’s history
Weekly Coursework for 20 Marks:  Write 1-2 paragraph review (100-150 words) of reading on BB9

British Empire in the Gulf 1800 – 1900;  Ras al-Khaimah and Qawasim resistance to British presence in the Gulf;  comparisons with Oman, Yemen Saudi Arabia;  Ottoman-Hejazi War in Arabia (1810-1820)

Week 3
Topics in Modern History of the Middle East:  Colonialism, Ottoman Empire and the Arab Provinces; Imperialism, and the Mandate System; the Arab Nahda, Arab Nationalism and Independence; Women in Gulf History
Weekly Coursework for 20 Marks:  Write 1-2 paragraph review (100-150 words) of episode from WWI through Arab Eyes on BB9

2nd Quiz on Readings and Class Discussions from Weeks 3-4 9see above)

Weekly Coursework for 20 Marks:  Draft of  Powerpoint (4-6 slides) or 1-page Word Document of final project (with 2 APA references)

Week 4
Topics in Modern  Gulf and Middle Eastern History
From World War I, 1948, 1967 and 1973 Wars; Oil Embargo; Rise of the UAE, GCC; The 1st and 2nd Gulf Wars)

Weeks 4
Final Project Oral Presentation (15%) Week 5;  Group or Individual Oral or  Multimedia Presentation on an aspect of modern Gulf and Middle Eastern History – may be an oral interview  or  study of  local or regional history from 1500 to present .  The oral presentation may be worth 15%  of  total grade.  
Weekly Coursework for 20 Marks:  attend and partake in discussion on topics
15% or ½ of 30% Final Project

Final Quiz  (15%) Week 6
The Final  Quiz will be a BB9 essay exam based on class discussion and course content and will be composed of three questions, two of which will be take-home questions that you may reflect on ahead of time and prepare two pages of handwritten notes to bring to class.
