In our first class this week we'll finish any presentations that were not completed or presented in class during Week 5.
We'll also use this time to let you summarize in your notes your research project and to develop your ideas of how Gulf History is presented and discussed.
In the last class session this week you'll take the Final Project Quiz which consists of three questions. Two of these questions will be given to you in advance to reflect on and prepare handwritten research notes. A third question on your understanding of modern Gulf history will also be on the quiz but you will not see this in advance.
The two take-home questions to prepare for are:
1) Discuss the transformation of the local economy and society of the early modern Gulf from 1450 to 1650. In your answer you should identify a source you used and discuss and analyze each of the following:
- For the period 1300 - 1500 what were the characteristics of the economy and society of the Arabian Gulf societies and their relation with the Arabian Seas, Indian Ocean and the Mashreq?
- For the period 1500 - 1650 what was the impact of the Age of Exploration and arrival of Europeans in the Gulf and Indian Ocean region?
2) Many outsiders consider that Arabian economy and society before oil was only based on pearl diving and sales of pearls. State the extent to which you agree or disagree with this assertion. Provide evidence or sources from your readings or interviews to support your conclusions?
